Tax Time: Look Out For Name Changes

Having your tax return arrive late is something that none of us want to worry about. Most of us try to file early so that we can receive that nice tax return quickly. For those of you who have recently gotten married, divorced, or have just decided to change your name for the fun of it we want to let you know that this could be a big problem for you.

Before you begin to file make sure that you have gone through the Social Security Administration (SSA) and properly changed your name. Also make sure that the name matches the one on your tax return. Any wrong names will have to be rectified and will delay that precious tax refund.

It doesn’t take very long to visit the SSA and inform them of the new name change. It does take two weeks for the change to take affect so you want to make sure that you take care of this early on. Try not to put it off till it’s too late or else you will end up filing late and paying heavy fines.

If you don’t know where your local SSA office is in your area you can always visit their website www.socialsecurity.gov and get any other information that you need from them.
