The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) stated that all of the economic stimulus checks that are overdue will finally be mailed out. Close to a quarter of a million married couples were denied partial amounts that they were owed because the spouse’s married name and social security number were different.
When two people get married the woman will usually change her name and alert the social security administration. But thousands have forgotten this step and were faced with the consequences of it. The IRS official website stated on October 8th that they would be mailing out the extra stimulus checks to 260,000 married couples whose names did not match. “During the processing of the 2007 returns for these taxpayers, the IRS was able to determine that the person listed on the return actually was the person associated with the SSN,” the Web site reads.
Many of these people should be getting their checks in the mail any day now letting them know how much money they will be receiving. The checks themselves should be coming by the end of the month. The IRS has taken full responsibility for the problem. “The IRS regrets the inconvenience for these affected taxpayers and will continue to work hard to deliver stimulus payments to qualifying taxpayers,” the Web site reads.
